Troops a massive security effort in conjunction with the Champions League final at Wembley in London, the match became a chaotic story at times. A total of 53 people were arrested, many of whom had stormed the pitch during the ongoing match.
A record sum of £5 million (equivalent to 67 million kronor) had been invested to increase security – including new fencing, gates, and surveillance. Additionally, around 2,500 officials were on site – also a record figure.
"We are convinced that the absolute majority of all attempts to force the barriers at Wembley tonight were futile, thanks to the police, stewards, and other arena personnel," says London Police's Louise Puddefoot in a statement.
Police and security companies wanted to avoid scenes like those during the 2020 EM final on the same arena, when 2,000 English fans without tickets forced the barriers to watch the match between England and Italy.
Uefa has been criticized for several incidents during recent Champions League finals. In 2022, thousands of spectators were stuck in queues outside the arena in Paris when Liverpool played Real Madrid, and last year Uefa was criticized for inadequate transportation to Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, where Manchester City won over Inter.
