The number of confirmed dead in storm-hit Myanmar has risen to 226 people, according to state-controlled TV late on Monday Swedish time. This is double the previously reported 113 confirmed fatalities.
In a report from the UN's humanitarian organization Ocha, it is estimated that around 630,000 people in the closed dictatorship are affected by Typhoon Yagi, which swept over Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar about a week ago.
In total, over 500 people in the entire region have died, according to official statistics. A large number of people are still missing, with 77 people unaccounted for in Myanmar.
The military junta, which regained power in a coup in 2021, turned to international aid organizations in an unusual distress call over the weekend.
Ocha writes in its report that the country's need for resources is acute.
