More than 1,000 foreign berry pickers are being rejected. The previous mismanagement, including missed paychecks, has led Migrationsverket to intensify its scrutiny of Thai staffing companies that supply labor to Swedish forests.
"The reasons for rejecting the applications for the approximately 1,200 intended workers are primarily related to working hours and compensation, for example, inconvenient working hours and overtime," says Hanna Geurtsen, section chief at Region North at Migrationsverket, in a press release.
Last year, around 500 berry pickers were rejected, while most applications were approved, according to the authority.
