Wet roads and temperatures fluctuating between plus and minus increase the risk of slippery roads throughout the country.

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute's yellow warning for icy roads has been issued in Värmland and parts of Västergötland from Monday evening to Christmas Eve morning.

However, it has also been tricky in other areas.

"Sliding with shoes on"

The rescue service in Östra Götaland has received several alarms about slippery roads in different parts of the area.

The two accidents we've had, which we've been out on, have been due to slippery roads. It's like glass on the roads, so that you slide with your shoes on when you walk, says Jonas Andersson, alarm and control operator at the rescue service Östra Götaland.

One accident occurred west of Linköping at 11:30 am when a car drove off the road and collided with a tree. Two people were taken to hospital by ambulance for control.

The other accident occurred at the E4 exit towards Strömsfors. No one needed medical attention in connection with the accident, reports Corren.

Warning in the north

The risk of slippery roads is higher on smaller roads and also on exits from larger roads, according to Jonas Andersson.

During the night towards Wednesday and Christmas morning, rain is expected in the north, which appears to result in difficult road conditions and further risk of slippery roads. The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute has then issued a yellow warning in parts of Jämtland, Västernorrland, and Norrbotten.

The advice from the Swedish Transport Administration to road users during the Christmas period is to stick to the larger roads, to keep a distance, and to adjust speed to the road conditions that prevail.
