A suspected perpetrator has been arrested after a knife attack at the memorial monument to the Holocaust in Berlin.

The police were quickly on the scene and cordoned off a large area in central Berlin. A large-scale operation was launched and during Friday evening, the police were able to apprehend a suspected person.

At the same time, rescue personnel took care of people who witnessed the event, as several were shocked by what had happened.

The injured man – a Spanish tourist in his 30s – was taken to hospital with injuries. His condition is reported to be stable.

According to several German media outlets, the police searched, among other places, the Holocaust Memorial in their search for the perpetrator. A fire truck was used, with its ladder raised so that the police could survey the labyrinthine memorial to the victims of the Holocaust.

It is, however, unclear whether the deed can be linked to the monument, which is located near the Brandenburg Gate and the American embassy.

Germany is going to the polls for the federal election on Sunday.
