Against Sweden - Norway says no to Saudi World Championship

Unlike Sweden, Norway openly protests against the allocation of the football World Championship to Saudi Arabia 2034. Norway will abstain from voting at the Fifa congress. "Abstaining from voting is a signal that we cannot support the procedure", says Lise Klaveness, chairman of the Norwegian football association.

Norway's Football Association (NFF) writes in a press release that it has already been decided that the World Championship 2034 will be awarded to Saudi Arabia and that the World Championship 2030 will go to Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.

This is because there are no other candidates ahead of the International Football Association's (Fifa) digital congress on Wednesday.

Sweden says yes

"At the congress, it's primarily about giving our feedback on Fifa's allocation process. The association board's assessment is that the process has not been in line with Fifa's own reforms," says chairman Lise Klaveness.

It has been reported that the championships will be pushed through by acclamation, i.e., without a formal vote.

"NFF cannot give our acclamation after a process that is not in line with a good and predictable rule-based system. Abstaining from voting is a signal that we cannot support the procedure," says Klaveness.

Earlier, the Swedish Football Association has stated that they intend to vote yes to the World Championship 2034 in Saudi Arabia. The same applies to the World Championship 2030 in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. A joint decision on the two championships will be made during the congress.

Writes a letter to Fifa

The Norwegian association will express its criticism of the process in a letter to Fifa's general secretary, Swede Mattias Grafström. Norway also requests that this be mentioned in the minutes from the congress.

The Norwegian association is seeking greater openness, fairness, and stricter adherence to Fifa's own reforms, which were introduced in 2016.
