With 541 matches for the club, Jonas Berglund is one of Luleå's true veterans. But the sixth SM final match against Brynäs this spring may have been his last.
The 34-year-old has had problems with his back for a long time and cannot get it in order despite rest and an individually adapted training program during the preseason. When the team started training on ice after the summer, the problems returned, writes Luleå on its website.
I received a heavy message from the specialist I met. I will need to undergo extensive back surgery and have a long rehabilitation period ahead of me. It's about at least eight months, says Jonas Berglund to NSD.
It was not what he wanted to hear.
It felt a bit like getting my legs kicked out from under me when I got the message, says Berglund, who still has not given up hope of a comeback.
Hockey is and will always be everything to me, so I hope it's not over.
The SHL season begins on September 13.
