The truck with the racing bikes was parked outside the hotel in Turin, Italy, where the Visma professional team lived after Sunday's second stage. It is one of three stages in the Tour of Spain that takes place in Italy.
The truck was broken into and bikes were stolen, says Visma's team manager Richard Plugge to Eurosport.
The newspaper Gazetta dello Sport reports that the burglars got hold of a total of 18 bikes with a total value of nearly 2.8 million kronor (250,000 euro). Some bikes were later found in a bush.
Some bikes have been found, but the police investigation is still ongoing. I do not know why those bikes were left behind, says Plugge.
Shortly before the start of the third stage – which is also run in Italy – Plugge announced that the team's cyclists will start.
Our mechanics have done a fantastic job by building together the bikes that are needed. They are coming here in a minute, then we fortunately have enough bikes to drive, he says and continues:
We live in the same hotel as Movistar and Lidl-Trek and they have been kind enough to help us with a little work. It's nice to see that the teams work together in this way.
Visma's Danish star cyclist Jonas Vingegaard won Sunday's second stage.
