The announcement came on Thursday evening, local time, a few hours after another fire broke out in the city. In a brief statement, the American football league announces that the decision was made in the "interest of public safety". The match will be played on Monday as planned, but in Arizona instead of Los Angeles.

The fires have affected several sports events in the city. An NBA match between Los Angeles Lakers and Charlotte Hornets has already been cancelled, as well as an NHL match between Los Angeles and Calgary.

The PGA golf tour is closely following the progress of the fires, but states in a message to the players that it is too early to say how the Genesis Invitational tournament will be affected. The tournament is scheduled to take place on February 13-16 at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, one of the areas hardest hit by the fires.

"Although Riviera Country Club has not been directly affected by the fires, our immediate concern is the health and well-being of those in the affected communities, including all our members who have ties to southern California".
