A judge refused a pro-Palestinian organization permission to demonstrate, but the group gathered despite this for a manifestation.

Around 200 people gathered at Dam Square in central Amsterdam and were met by police who arrested several demonstrators.

Many will undoubtedly go there, since there is a widespread feeling of frustration that people want to express, says a demonstrator to De Telegraaf about why he went to the location.

The demonstration ban comes after Amsterdam's mayor Femke Halsema promised enhanced security for Jews in the city and issued a temporary ban on protests over the weekend.

Even on Saturday, a small, illegal, pro-Palestinian demonstration was held at Dam Square, then without requiring a larger police operation.

Israeli football supporters were attacked on Thursday by people shouting Palestinian slogans after a football match between Dutch Ajax and Israeli Maccabi Tel Aviv. Five supporters were taken to hospital.

In the Netherlands, the violence has led to extensive debate about anti-Semitism and how to prevent violence against Jews and other groups in the future.
