The media company Center For Investigative Reporting is suing Open AI and its partner Microsoft. It is the latest in a series of lawsuits against the companies.

The non-profit media company – which includes the news magazine Mother Jones in its portfolio – works with investigative journalism and claims that Open AI has used copyrighted material produced by the company without permission.

It is very dangerous and can really destroy us as an independent news medium, says the company's CEO Monika Bauerlein to the news agency AP.

Microsoft and Open AI have previously been sued in similar contexts, where newspapers claim that the companies have illegally used texts to develop their AI services.

Behind the lawsuits are newspapers such as The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, The New York Daily News, and The Denver Post.

Open AI and other major AI entrepreneurs do not disclose which data sources they use to "train" their chatbots. But they believe that much of the material used is covered by "fair use", a concept in American legislation that concerns exceptions in copyright law.
