Navalny in new book: Will die in prison

Aleksej Navalnyj, who was the Russian President Vladimir Putin's main political opponent before his death earlier this year, was convinced that he would die in captivity. This emerges from his forthcoming memoirs, which The New Yorker has published an excerpt from.

"I will spend the rest of my life in prison and die here", wrote Navalny in March 2022 and continued:

"There will be no one to say goodbye to. All birthdays will be celebrated without me. I will never get to see my grandchildren".

Alexei Navalny died under unclear circumstances in a Russian penal colony in February. He was imprisoned in connection with his return to his homeland in 2021 after nearly dying in a poisoning attempt the year before.

In one of the book's last chapters, dated to January this year, Navalny responds to the question he received from both fellow prisoners and guards: Why did he return to Russia?

"I don't want to give up my country or betray it. If your convictions mean something to you, you must be prepared to stand up for them and make the sacrifices required", is his reasoning.
