The US Department of Justice has warned Elon Musk that his voter lottery in support of Donald Trump may be illegal, writes Financial Times.
The lottery involves voters who sign a petition that Elon Musk has put forward, in support of freedom of speech and the right to bear arms, participating in a drawing where the prize is one million dollars – approximately ten million kronor.
Musk, one of Trump's most outspoken supporters and donors, has already handed out four such million-dollar checks at as many Trump election rallies. He is set to continue with one per day until the election on November 5.
A source tells the newspaper that the assessment is that the distribution may violate rules that prohibit paying people to register as voters. At his rallies, Musk strongly emphasizes the importance of early voting, something that Republican voters tend not to do to the same extent as Democratic voters.
