Several people have died after a boat sank off the coast of Senegal, the navy reports. Several death tolls are circulating, but at least around five people are reported to have lost their lives in the incident.
An unknown number of migrants were on board the boat when the accident occurred on Sunday off the coast of the city of M'bour.
Three survivors have been identified and an unknown number of people have been rescued. However, it is unclear how many are missing.
Many African migrants heading for Europe depart from Senegal's coast. The stretch along the Atlantic coast is very dangerous, among other things due to strong currents. Thousands of people die and disappear every year on overcrowded boats.
More than 22,000 migrants have landed on the Canary Islands so far this year.
