The death toll is rising after a boat sank off the coast of Senegal over the weekend. At least 39 people have lost their lives in the incident, according to the country's navy.
On board the boat were, according to eyewitnesses, tens of migrants, and it capsized a few kilometers from the town of M'bour on Sunday.
Many African migrants heading for Europe depart from Senegal's coast. The stretch along the Atlantic coast is very dangerous, among other things due to strong currents. Thousands of people die and disappear every year on overcrowded boats.
More than 22,000 migrants have so far this year landed on the Canary Islands.
