The former MMA star Conor McGregor shook his head when the jury's verdict was read out in the civil lawsuit and he left the court in Dublin without making any comments, reports British media.
McGregor is deemed guilty of raping a woman in a hotel room in the Irish capital on December 9, 2018.
"Brutally raped"
The victim has stated that she was "brutally raped and beaten" and that she has suffered from post-traumatic stress syndrome after the rape. She has said that McGregor threatened to kill her during the rape.
When McGregor previously testified in the case, the 36-year-old claimed that he had not forced the woman to have sex.
Another man was accused of raping and sexually assaulting the woman in the hotel room, but he was acquitted by the jury.
Earlier in November, the Irish prosecution authority (DPP) decided not to prosecute McGregor and the other man. The authority has stated that the case was complex and that it was unlikely that a prosecution would lead to a conviction.
This led to the woman suing the duo in a civil lawsuit. The evidence requirements in such cases are lower than in a regular criminal case, according to news agency AFP.
"Disappointed"
"I am disappointed that the jury did not hear all the evidence that the DPP went through. Now I am with my family, focusing on my future", writes Conor McGregor on X and states that he will appeal the verdict.
McGregor is one of the biggest stars in MMA history. The Irishman was world champion in two different weight classes in the largest MMA organization UFC for a few years.
He topped the 2021 Forbes list of athletes who earned the most during the year with an income of 180 million dollars before tax.
