The social media company excludes, among others, the TV channel Russia Today. The reason is, according to Meta, that Russian media have been involved in secret and misleading influence operations on the net.
Meta's stop of Russian media comes after the USA earlier this fall accused several RT employees of money laundering to finance online content to influence the upcoming presidential election in the USA.
Russia calls Meta's shutdown "unacceptable" in a comment on Tuesday.
With this action, Meta discredits itself. Such actions against Russian media are unacceptable, says Kremlin spokesperson Dmitrij Peskov on Tuesday.
Russia accounts for the largest share of secret influence operations detected by Meta, and the activity has increased significantly since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
