The 31-year-old doctor was found murdered and raped at her workplace in August. The suspected man, who worked as a volunteer at the hospital, was arrested the day after. He risks the death penalty if he is convicted of the crimes.
The man claims he is innocent and that someone has framed him for the murder, according to the man's lawyer Sourav Bandyopadhyay.
The rape and murder have led to nationwide protests against men's violence against women. In Calcutta, doctors have gone on strike for several weeks as a result of the attack. Among other things, they are demanding better lighting, security cameras, and other measures to protect female doctors. Tens of thousands of other Indians have joined the protests.
