The founder of the website is an Italian citizen and he is accused of several crimes since he was arrested on Tuesday. Among other things, he is accused of having administered a digital platform to facilitate an organized gang's illegal transactions.
The now convicted Frenchman Dominique Pelicot used the website to recruit strangers who raped his drugged wife Gisèle on several occasions over more than a decade.
Dominique Pelicot has been sentenced to the maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. In the high-profile French case, 51 people were prosecuted, and all were found guilty, most of them for aggravated rape.
