Several monks have been assaulted in an attack on a monastery in the Spanish region of Valencia. On Saturday, a man entered the Santo Espíritu del Monte monastery and attacked four of the seven monks living in the monastery, according to Spanish media.
The man hit the monks with sticks and is reported to have shouted "I am Jesus Christ". He then fled the scene.
According to a statement from the archbishop, it was "a disturbed person" who entered the monastery and attacked the brothers when they were in their rooms, with the explicit intention of killing, reports Spanish ABC.
The injured are four men: 57, 66, 76, and 95 years old. One of the monks is seriously injured and was taken to hospital with head injuries.
On Sunday, the Spanish police announced that a 45-year-old man had been arrested, suspected of the attack.
