Escalated drone attacks between Kyiv and Moscow

The drone war between Russia and Ukraine intensified over the weekend. A massive Ukrainian drone attack crippled parts of Moscow and partially stopped traffic at the city's airports. Russia, on its part, carried out a large-scale nocturnal drone offensive against targets around Ukraine.

Ukraine attacked the Russian capital with a large number of drones, of which about 30 were shot down on Sunday, according to Russian military sources. Remains of drones hit a residential area outside Moscow. The attacks also forced airports Moscow's Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, and Zhukovo to temporarily close traffic.

Russian military sources say that a total of about 70 drones were shot down during the Ukrainian attacks over the weekend, most of them targeting border areas with Ukraine. The drone attack from the Ukrainian side is the largest so far during the Russian invasion war.

Largest so far

Russia, in turn, fired 145 drones at targets in Ukraine, according to the country's military. It is the largest attack since the Russian full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky confirms the number of Russian drones fired, and writes on Telegram that Russia has sent over 600 drones against Ukraine in the past week. He also appealed for further help from allies to combat the Russian attacks.

"Without strong decisions, we will not have security against terror, it is equally clear in all countries. And there will be no reliable peace without justice, and achieving this is realistic for Ukraine", he writes.

Major Russian losses

Moscow announced on Sunday that a defense pact with North Korea had been signed by President Vladimir Putin. In the agreement, both countries promise to use "all means" if either country is attacked.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov signaled cautious optimism from the Russian side about the American election of Donald Trump as the next US president.

He does not speak about the importance of inflicting strategic losses on Russia, which means a positive change compared to the current American government.

Both Russia and Ukraine are silent about the number of dead and wounded the Russian invasion has claimed. But the head of Britain's defense staff, Tony Radakin, says in an interview with the British BBC that battles in October have claimed 1,500 dead and wounded Russian soldiers per day, and that Russian losses in the invasion war amount to 700,000 Russian soldiers put out of action.
