Social Democrats want to put more pressure on tech giants when it comes to how children and young people use social media, including tightening rules on how algorithms work.
One of the proposals, which is presented ahead of the EU election on Sunday, is to create more effective age controls on social media. Another is to limit advertising targeted at young people.
Exactly how the regulations will look has not been clarified, but the party is urging the EU Commission to expand EU's legislation for digital services (DSA) with this.
Even the Liberals have launched proposals ahead of the EU election to make social media less addictive, for example by banning push notifications to young people in the evenings and nights and through slower scrolling.
The Christian Democrats want to put pressure on the EU to introduce stricter rules for social media and set higher demands on companies. The party wants to limit usage time, increase parental control, and be able to block certain types of ads or topics as part of social media's basic settings.
Companies will also have to be able to show that their products and apps are not harmful or addictive.
