Borås zoo was forced to put down one of its lions over the weekend, after a piece of meat got stuck in its throat during the general feeding, reports Borås Tidning.
The piece of meat got stuck far down in the esophagus and could not be removed.
Several of the zoo's visitors witnessed the tragic event.
We realized immediately that it was bad, but still sedated to see if we could do something. When we understood that we couldn't do anything, we decided to put him down, says the zoo's zoologist Johan Jönsson to the newspaper.
The lion was one of three male lions born in the zoo last year.
