Janet Jackson apologizes for spreading a conspiracy theory about presidential candidate Kamala Harris' ethnicity, writes Deadline.
In an interview with The Guardian, Janet Jackson claimed that she had heard that Kamala Harris' father is white, not a black man from Jamaica. A conspiracy theory spread by Trump supporters – and even by Donald Trump himself.
Now, Jackson's manager is issuing an apology, stating that the star's statement "was based on incorrect information" about Kamala Harris' family relationships.
"She holds deep respect for Vice President Kamala Harris and her achievements as a black and Indian woman. Janet apologizes for the confusion she caused and is of the opinion that it is important to have correct information in public discourse", the statement reads.
Kamala Harris' father, Donald Harris, is a Jamaican-American professor of economics at Stanford University. Harris' mother, Shyamala Gopalan, who passed away in 2009, worked in breast cancer research and immigrated to the USA from Madras in southern India.
