"SHK's investigation shows that the fire likely started in connection with these works. The fire then spread from the pipes to the water slide and further to the facility, causing extensive damage", writes the Accident Investigation Commission in an interim report.
The method used to join the pipes is called electrofusion welding and involves heating up and melting the plastic pipes together.
Incorrect method
The work was likely performed in an incorrect manner, says Håkan Josefsson, investigation leader at the Accident Investigation Commission to Göteborgs-Posten.
It can lead to overheating and smoke development if you don't do this work step correctly. That's what we believe was the reason for this starting.
At the same time, it is unclear which company was responsible for the work on the water slide. The main contractor NCC says that neither the company nor any of its subcontractors performed the work.
Liseberg, in turn, refers to the company Whitewater West, which manufactures water slides. However, this is denied by Whitewater West, writes GP.
To be rebuilt
One person died in the fire that broke out on February 12 this year.
The investigation is still ongoing and is expected to be completed in early 2025. According to the Accident Investigation Commission, the focus is now on why the accident could occur and what measures can be taken to prevent similar events from happening again.
The water park was intended to open last summer. After the fire, a decision was made to rebuild the adventure pool. It is expected to be completed in 2026.
