According to the company Medtronic, too much insulin can be dosed in connection with takeoff – which could lead to low blood sugar, writes Läkartidningen. In connection with landing, it can instead dose too little insulin, which can lead to high blood sugar.
This applies to various insulin pumps, all with the name Minimed.
A total of 138 reports have been received, of which 19 concern serious injuries, which may be related to the problem.
Medtronic urges patients to frequently check their glucose values in connection with flying, and to be prepared to treat any increases or decreases in blood sugar.
According to Jarl Hellman, chairman of the Swedish Association for Diabetology, it is not only the Minimed insulin pump that can dose incorrectly in the air.
"Extra vigilance during flying applies to all pumps," he writes in an email to Läkartidningen.
