Hungary is doing as the Netherlands and applying for a formal exemption from the EU's asylum and migration policy.
"The Hungarian government is determined to take strong measures to protect its borders and curb illegal migration that threatens national security", writes EU Minister János Bóka in a letter to the EU Commission, which he also posted on his Facebook page, according to the AFP news agency.
Like the similar application submitted by the Netherlands in September, however, an amendment to the EU's fundamental treaty is required for a country to be exempt from any of the EU's policy areas. No treaty amendment is currently on the agenda – not least because it would require unanimity among member states and in several cases also referendums.
