There was talk of a tough draw against, among others, Tottenham, Roma, Galatasaray, Athletic Bilbao and Nice.
But halfway through the eight-match group stage, Elfsborg has already surprised twice. First against Roma (1–0) and then against Braga (1–1). Moreover, the Borås team has narrowly lost to AZ Alkmaar and Galatasaray.
A draw is a draw, but we're here to compete – not just to participate. You have to have respect for your opponents, but also find their weaknesses, says Oscar Hiljemark after 1–1 against Braga on Thursday evening.
"Proud and happy"
I think there's respect for us too. I mean, we came to Galatasaray and they changed their playing system for the first time ... ever?
After two matches at Borås Arena, Elfsborg still hasn't lost at home. Despite Hiljemark chasing a win against Braga, he stated that he's satisfied with what his players have achieved in the tournament so far.
I go into the dressing room and am a bit disappointed. But it also makes me proud and happy that we can compete at this level. Four points are probably okay if you look at the table, he says.
"The chance is there"
In total, 24 out of 36 teams will advance to a knockout phase – and four collected points mean that Elfsborg is currently among the 24 best.
Previously, experts have talked about needing around nine-ten points to reach a playoff spot.
I know people are talking about this and that many points. I think the chance is there. Since the tournament began, we've been among the 24 best, and that's our goal, says Oscar Hiljemark.
