Ioannis Ioannidis is normally the head of surgery at USÖ, but when the alarm about a school shooting in Örebro came on Tuesday, he switched to becoming the medical leader in the emergency department.
He describes how the atmosphere and work in the emergency department changed when the organization went into a so-called special event. The staff was organized into so-called trauma teams.
It's a team that takes care of the patient. It's dedicated people who have a dedicated task and a team captain, says Ioannis Ioannidis.
On Tuesday, seven such trauma teams were ready at USÖ, and there was enough staff to assemble three, four more teams, he says.
We basically knew that everyone would need fairly acute care and many would need to go into surgery.
In total, the hospital received five gunshot victims and one more person who was present at the shooting but not injured.
Ioannis Ioannidis has not yet, a day after the first alarm came to the hospital, managed to understand what has happened.
No, not really. It's been going on for 24 hours, so it will probably come.
