The researchers behind the study, which is published in Jama Health Forum, have analyzed global data and come to the conclusion that for every 5,400 vaccine doses given, a life could be saved.
According to the study, approximately 15 million life years were also saved as a result of the vaccination, of which nearly 80 percent concerned people over 60 years old. And of the 2.5 million lives saved, nearly 90 percent concerned people who are 60 years or older.
Of the prevented deaths, more than 80 percent concerned people who were vaccinated before they became infected with the virus.
According to the researchers, the covid vaccines were significant for global mortality between 2020 and 2024, seen from the perspective of the older population. Children and young people accounted for only a marginal part of the saved lives and life years.
