Trump has already said that Haiti is a "shithole" so I don't think he'll care about Haiti, says the acting president Leslie Voltaire, referring to a comment from the US President during his first term.
According to Voltaire, approximately 1.5 million Haitians are in the USA. About 150,000 have a special protection status in the country.
Trump says he will deport them all, says Voltaire, adding that Haiti, which is already struggling with famine and a large number of internally displaced persons, cannot handle the influx.
The number of internally displaced persons in Haiti has tripled in the past year and now exceeds one million people, according to a report from the UN's refugee agency IOM. The situation has largely been caused by the gang violence that plagues the country, particularly the capital Port-au-Prince.
Leslie Voltaire says that half of Haiti's 11.4 million people are already going hungry today. Losing humanitarian aid will dramatically worsen the situation.
The transitional government led by Voltaire has been given the difficult task of leading the country to general elections, which the acting president hopes can take place by the end of the year.
