The President of the Comoros Islands, Azali Assoumani, was stabbed on Friday during a funeral.
The President suffered only minor injuries in the attack and the suspected perpetrator, a 24-year-old soldier, was arrested. On Saturday, the public prosecutor, Ali Mohamed Djounaid, announced that the detainee had been found dead in an isolation cell.
He was placed in isolation to calm down after the arrest. Investigators found his lifeless body on the floor in the morning, said Djounaid at a press conference.
The attack took place at the funeral of a religious leader near the capital Moroni.
The prosecutor announced that an investigation into the cause of death would be launched, and that the suspected perpetrator "had not been questioned" before he died.
The 65-year-old President Assoumani has held office on the islands in the Indian Ocean in several terms since 2002.
