Damages Everyday Life for Ordinary People

The opposition is critical of the infrastructure bill. Too little money is being allocated to the railway, according to the parties. It will "harm the daily lives of ordinary people", according to the Social Democrats.

"The maintenance of roads gets ten times more. We will simply continue to see train passengers stranded on platforms around the country while the roads are being upgraded", says the Green Party's Daniel Helldén in a written comment.

Helldén warns that the "train chaos" will continue.

"You won't catch up with the severely neglected maintenance and don't invest in the railway that is urgently needed", he comments.

The Centre Party's Ulrika Heie, chair of the Riksdag's traffic committee, is also critical.

"They make an extreme difference in investments in maintenance. The roads get an increase of 48 percent and the railway 5 percent. It's sad to hear that the government lacks vision for the railway, and that they blame the Swedish Transport Administration."

She points out that technical problems and cancelled departures have become everyday occurrences and that night trains are being withdrawn.

"The direction presented today will be another blow to Swedish railways", she continues.

The Social Democrats' traffic policy spokesperson Gunilla Svantorp says that the government and the Sweden Democrats are making a "historic mistake".

"Not investing more in the railway will harm the daily lives of ordinary people who will continue to wait for cancelled and delayed trains. It will harm growth and business. And it will harm the climate."
