Green light for the government's financial policy

The Government has presented its fiscal policy in accordance with the fiscal policy framework, according to an audit by the National Audit Office. But the policy is "not fully designed in accordance with the framework".

"The surplus target is undershot and the framework provides support for a slightly more restrictive fiscal policy in 2025. The support to Ukraine is an important explanation for this and there is support in the Riksdag to handle this support outside the ordinary order", writes the National Audit Office.

The audit has covered the 2024 economic spring proposal and the budget proposal for 2025.

The National Audit Office wants to see a better comparison of the Ministry of Finance's forecast for the structural savings, primarily compared to the National Institute of Economic Research's and the Swedish Agency for Government Support's forecasts.

The National Audit Office also wants the government to present a clear plan for returning to the surplus target and to complement the follow-up of the municipal sector's balance requirements with separate reporting for municipalities and regions respectively.
