A German citizen has been sentenced to death in Belarus, accused of, among other things, terrorism, reports the human rights organization Vjasna.
The 30-year-old man is said to have been sentenced in a closed trial in June, according to Vjasna. State-controlled Belarusian media have not reported on his case.
Vjasna reports that there are signs that the case may be linked to a group of Belarusian volunteers who, in defiance of their Putin-allied regime, have chosen to fight against Russia in Ukraine.
The leader of the Belarusian exile opposition, Svetlana Tichanovskaja, says that her team is trying to obtain more information about the verdict. "According to the information we have right now, he was accused of several so-called 'extremism'-related crimes", she writes on X.
