The US presidential candidate Donald Trump ridiculed what he called Harris' unwillingness towards fossil fuels and the extraction method fracking during the night's debate – by referring to Germany. According to Trump, Germany has made a failed attempt to invest in renewable energy.
Germany tried it and within a year they were back to building normal power plants, he claimed.
The Foreign Ministry in Berlin is hitting back at Trump's statement that Germany is investing in fossil fuels.
"We're shutting down – not building – coal and nuclear power plants," they write in a post on X and add:
"Coal will be phased out by 2038 at the latest."
Germany was criticized by climate activists when the country temporarily reopened coal-fired power plants in 2022, but since then Berlin has managed to reduce the use of fossil fuels.
In the X post, the German Foreign Ministry takes the opportunity to send a jab at another of Trump's claims in the debate against Harris: that migrants in Ohio eat people's pets, something that several American media outlets have found to be baseless.
"Ps: We don't eat cats and dogs either", the Foreign Ministry writes.
