The actress Gena Rowlands is suffering from Alzheimer's. This is confirmed by her son Nick Cassavetes, writes The Guardian. Twenty years ago, Rowlands, now 94 years old, played the dementia-stricken Alice in the film "The Notebook", which was directed by her son.
The role was particularly difficult for her, as her own mother suffered from the disease.
I went through it with my mum and if Nick hadn't directed, I don't think I would have done it – it's just too hard. It was a tough but wonderful film, she said then.
