The airport in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince is temporarily closed after armed gangs attempted to take control of it. This is reported by the US embassy in the country.
Earlier on Monday, reports emerged that a passenger plane scheduled to land at the airport was hit by gunfire.
The plane, which came from Fort Lauderdale in Florida, was unable to land and had to fly to the neighboring Dominican Republic where it could land safely.
A crew member is reported to have suffered minor injuries.
The gangs are said to have tried to block the road from the capital to the airport. Heavy gunfire also broke out between gangs and police inside Port-au-Prince. In parts of the city that were at least previously more affluent, several houses were set on fire.
Haiti, one of the world's poorest countries, has been plunged into chaos and anarchy since criminal gangs took over the capital Port-au-Prince. As a result, security and the healthcare system in the country have largely collapsed.
