The new owners of a house in Erstroff in eastern France found a human skeleton in the attic during a renovation. The skeleton likely belongs to a previous owner who disappeared 15 years ago, according to French prosecutors.

The house was purchased in 2023 after the widow of the previous owner passed away in 2020.

The skeleton was discovered when the current owner was searching for a leak in the roof. The police are now investigating the cause of death, and the remains have been sent to Strasbourg for forensic examination.

The prosecutor states that there are circumstances that suggest no crime was committed in connection with the death.

The newspaper Le Republicain Lorrain reports that the man's disappearance has remained unsolved despite many extensive search efforts in the surrounding area.
