"Free Rein for Troll Factories with Trump and Musk"

The dismantling of independent journalism that has begun in the USA can very well happen here. The new times that prevail require a new media policy, write five former media executives in a debate article.

The digital capitalism and the political power have formed an alliance in a way we have never seen before. They call it freedom of speech, but the purpose is to suppress media that work according to journalistic principles, stick to facts, and scrutinize the political power.

Among others, Kerstin Brunnberg, Christina Jutterström, and Jan Scherman write on DN Debatt and mean that it's time to take the threats seriously, even in Sweden.

"A political review of the rules for social media is needed, and a re-evaluation when it comes to financing of both daily press and public service. Independent scrutinizing journalism, which requires large resources, is, for example, a completely necessary counterforce against disinformation and abuse of power."

The President of the USA, Donald Trump, has shut out traditional media from press conferences, and with Trump and Elon Musk, there has been a dramatic change in how social media function, which, according to the authors of the debate article, makes it free rein for troll factories.

"The legislation we have in Sweden and in the EU is built on the media's own self-regulation. How do Swedish and EU legislators respond to the American challenge", wonder the former media executives.
