France goes against the trend - cinema visits increase

Cinemas all over the world are still struggling with the pandemic's aftermath – with one exception. In France, cinemas have recovered and had almost the same revenue as before the pandemic in 2024, according to industry figures.

According to figures from the French National Cinema Centre, CNC, the number of visitors increased by one million people last year, compared to 2023.

The recovery of the French cinema market is attributed, among other things, to the state support for French-language films.

Total, French films attracted 44 percent of cinema-goers last year, which is the highest proportion since 2008, according to figures from CNC. In other major European countries, the corresponding figure is between 15 and 25 percent.

Another explanation for the increase is that French cinemas are trying to get cinema-goers to linger in the premises before and after the film, including through investments in lectures, food and wine tastings, concerts or workshops for local schoolchildren during holidays.

Besides France, Brazil and Bolivia have also seen a certain increase in the number of cinema-goers since the pandemic.
