Australia's men's national team has got a new national team captain in football. Former Crystal Palace defender Tony Popovic takes over after Graham Arnold, who resigned on Friday after setbacks in the attempts to secure a spot in the World Championship 2026.
Popovic, 51, is from Australia but has played in England with Crystal Palace and has also been an assistant coach there. He has also worked in clubs in Greece and Turkey. Over the past decade, he has had coaching assignments in clubs in Australia.
The first major test for him will be the World Championship qualifying match against China on October 10.
