A man in India has been formally charged with rape and murder of a female doctor at a hospital in Calcutta.
With the formal charges, documents about the investigation have been submitted to a court, including confidential evidence.
The 31-year-old doctor was found murdered and raped at her workplace in August. The suspected man, who worked as a volunteer at the hospital, was arrested the day after. He risks the death penalty if convicted of the crimes.
The rape and murder have led to nationwide protests against men's violence against women. In Calcutta, doctors have gone on strike for several weeks as a result of the attack. Among other things, they are demanding better lighting, security cameras, and other measures to protect female doctors. Tens of thousands of other Indians have joined the protests.
Last month, India's Supreme Court ordered a national committee to investigate how security can be strengthened for healthcare personnel in the country.
