The Cathedral of Notre Dame's bells have rung out over Paris. It is the first time this has happened since a devastating fire ravaged large parts of the building.
This is a beautiful, important and symbolic step, says Philippe Jost, who leads the public authority responsible for the restoration.
The ringing of the eight bells in the cathedral's north bell tower on Friday takes place a month before the cathedral reopens to the public – and just over five years after the world heritage site was engulfed in flames in April 2019.
Around 250 companies and hundreds of experts have been involved in the restoration, which has cost hundreds of millions of euros.
