The US's infectious disease control agency announces that the first severe case of bird flu in a human in the country has been detected. A patient in the state of Louisiana is being treated in hospital. The affected person had been in contact with sick and dead birds kept privately in a backyard, the agency reports.

So far, around 60 people have fallen ill in the latest outbreak of bird flu in the USA, but all have had milder symptoms. Most of the cases have been linked to animal husbandry.

Earlier, the US Department of Agriculture USDA ordered tests of unpasteurized milk across the country.
