The extensive fires in Los Angeles mean that the NBA match between Los Angeles Lakers and Charlotte Hornets is cancelled. "Our thoughts go to all those affected by this indescribable situation", writes Lakers on X.

The match was supposed to be played during the night against Friday, Swedish time. A new date is not planned.

On Wednesday, the Los Angeles–Calgary match in NHL ice hockey was also postponed. The city's ice hockey and basketball teams share an arena in central LA.

Several of the fires raging around Los Angeles are still not under control. Five people have died, but the figure is feared to rise. The fires are described as the most destructive in the city's modern time.

Nearly 2,000 homes and buildings have been destroyed in the fires, but the figure is constantly increasing and tens of thousands of properties are threatened by the flames.
