"We did not sign a contract with Shon because the comments he made online are not compatible with Fortuna's values", writes a spokesperson for the club to the newspaper The Athletic.

Weissman's outburst occurred after Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and Israel's subsequent invasion. According to the newspaper, Weissman is said to have urged violent reprisals and liked and shared other posts on social media that urged violence against the population in Gaza.

According to information in several international media outlets, the former national team player had already traveled to Düsseldorf and undergone the mandatory medical examination with the club. But after information about the deal leaked out in the German press and fans protested against the recruitment on social media, the club backed down.

"Fortuna is committed to combating violence and hate. So what we have found has led to us now deciding not to sign a contract with the player", the statement continues.

According to a spokesperson for Weissman, he feels remorse and claims that the outbursts occurred when the player was emotional after the attack on October 7.
