At least ten people have died in a fire at an elderly home in Spain, according to the Spanish rescue service. Several others have been injured, and the condition of two of them is reported to be life-threatening.
The elderly home is located in the small town of Villafranca de Ebro, just outside Zaragoza in the northeastern part of the country. The alarm was raised at five o'clock in the morning, and the fire is now under control.
More than 80 people were in the building when the fire broke out. Many were elderly, but in recent times, the home has also taken in people suffering from mental illness.
The town's mayor, Volga Ramirez Gamiz, tells reporters that the fire was confined to one room, which had a safety door, but that the smoke spread throughout the building, writes AFP.
The cause of the deaths is being investigated, but the central government's representative in the region, Fernando Beltran, says that the deaths were likely caused by the smoke.
