The Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo brought home two Olympic Games gold medals during the games in Paris. When he returned to Manila, Yulo was celebrated as a great hero.
In a televised tribute, the 24-year-old received money and gifts worth 58 million Filipino pesos – equivalent to 10.5 million kronor – from the country's president and other donors.
I am beyond blessed and grateful, Yulo said to the press on site.
Among the gifts were a vacation home outside Manila, free national and international flights, and free buffets for life. Authorities, large companies, and businessmen contributed to the generous gifts.
The President of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos Jr, gave the Filipino Olympic athletes equivalent to 175,000 kronor, but Yulo received equivalent to 3.5 million kronor from Marcos Jr.
Yulo won gold in floor exercise and vault during the Olympic Games in Paris, which is the greatest Olympic achievement by a Filipino athlete ever.
