Nine people have been killed in Jenin and one person in a nearby village, according to the Palestinian Authority (PA), which holds limited self-government in the West Bank, reports The Times of Israel.
Several airstrikes have been carried out and several explosive charges have been neutralized during the raid, according to Israel, which announced on Tuesday that the operation will continue "as long as necessary".
Jenin's governor, Kamal Abu al-Rub, describes the situation as "very difficult":
The occupation army has destroyed all roads leading to the camp in Jenin and leading to Jenin's state hospital. There is shooting and explosions.
According to the governor, around 20 people in villages near the city have been arrested.
The operation in Jenin reflects what the Israeli military has learned from repeated strikes in Gaza, says Defense Minister Israel Katz. The lesson is about the importance of eliminating terrorists and destroying terrorist infrastructure in Jenin – "without terrorism returning", he says in a statement on Wednesday according to Haaretz.
"We will not allow Iran's tentacles or radical Sunni Islam to endanger the settlers' lives, or to establish a terrorist front east of Israel", says Katz.
